Religion & Philosophy
Though by birth a Saivite, Professor had chosen “Vaishnavism” as the thematic topic for his research [PhD], conducted a very elaborate and comprehensive research and submitted his thesis in 1969, ‘Religion and Philosophy of Nalayira Divya Prabhandham with special reference to Nammalvar’, which was later [1977] published as a book with a Foreword from Dr M Anananthasayanam Iyengar, Ex-Governor of Bihar and Ex-Speaker of Lok Sabha. Dr Iyengar observes in his Foreword that the book is Professor’s magnum opus. Most of the books written after 1969, are based either on religious theme or received religious treatment.
Professor excels himself when the theme is either religion or philosophy. He profoundly uses the hymns of Alvars whenever the subject matter deserves religious touch or he himself decides to give a religious/philosophical treatment. One can see, here and there, the scientific touch though the theme is religious or philosophical. Giving religious/philosophical treatment to science topics and giving scientific treatment to religious/philosophical topics is unique to Professor himself. He speaks about his own experiences [as he visited personally 102 Vaishnavite shrines] whenever/wherever he handles Vaishnavism or other allied fields. Students doing research either on religion or philosophy or Tamil literature find many of his books, under this category, are very appealing and useful.
